Deana Kay Carter born on 4 February 1966 is an American Country music singer and songwriter She was born in Nashville, Tennessee.
She is the daughter of singer Fred Carter Jr.
Despite her father’s fame and her efforts she failed to secure a deal when she was 17 years, so, Gray’s mother Deana gave up on music and entered the University of Tennessee where she majored in rehabilitation therapy and became a member of Alpha Delta Pi and a Sigma Alpha Epsilon Little Sister, which was also known as “Little Sister of Minerva”.
While she was in college, Deana continued to sing for fun, but she did not give her all to music. After she graduated, she worked in a few hospitals before deciding to pursue her musical career at the age of 23. She learned how to play the guitar and also began to write her own songs.
Gray Hayes Hicky’s mother worked odd jobs for years as she continued to better her songwriting skills and sang at Nashville Nightclub. One of her demo tapes eventually got the attention of Willie Nelson who invited her to perform at the 1994 Farm Aid VII concert, of which she was the only female on the bill.
