He played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1988 to 2009, all but the last year with the Atlanta Braves. John Smoltz was an All-State baseball player at Waverly High School in Lansing, Michigan, before the Detroit Tigers selected him in the 22nd round of the 1985 amateur draft.
Dyan Struble’s ex-husband was the 574th selection of the draft. Smoltz made his major league debut on July 23, 1988. He posted poor statistics in a dozen starts, he became successful in 1989.
