Garrett Henry Hopper was born on 25 May 1852 in Haledon, Passaic, New Jersey, United States. He is the son of Christian A. Hopper and Charity Blauvelt. Garrett was baptized in 1870 and lived with his grandmother and uncle in Ridgewood.
On March 26 ,1878, Garrett got married to Elizabeth Griffith Smith at the age of 25 in Nyack, Rockland co, New York. They got married in a beautiful ceremony in the presence of their friends, family, and loved ones. They gave birth to two children, Edward and Marion Louise Hopper.

On 9 July 1924, Edward married his fellow painter Josephine Nivison in Manhattan, New York, United States. She was known to be outgoing and knew her way around the world of art. She was the only female model for her paintings and she also worked hard to get her husband’s work shown.

His growing success permitted him more time to paint and turned out work that is regarded for its use of light and mood. All major museums like the Metropolitan Museum Of Art 1931 were paying thousands of dollars for his works. In 1933, the Museum Of Modern Art gave Edward his first large-scale retrospective.
Edward died in 1967 at the age of 85 in his studio in Greenwich, New York City. His wife Josephine who died soon after him donated all his works to the Whitney Museum Of American Art. Edward was buried at the Oak Hill Cemetary, Nyack, Rockland, New York.
