Alphonse Chanel gained public recognition through his sister Coco Chanel. Her sister Gabrielle Bouheur Chanel, professionally known as Coco Chanel, was a French fashion designer and businesswoman. She was born on 10 February 1971 in Saumur, France. She was the founder of the fashion brand “Chanel”. She was the first to see style as both classic and casual.
Their parents are Eugénie Jeanne Devolle Chanel, a laundry woman, in the charity hospital run by the Sisters of Providence in Seumur, Maine-et-Loire and Albert Chanel, a street vendor who peddled work clothes and undergarments. She is the second child of her parents.
Coco and her sisters were sent to Aubazine, an orphanage. That is where she learned how to sew. Having learned to sew during her six years stay at Aubazine, Coco was employed as a seamstress. She loved to sing, so when she is not sewing, she is singing. She usually sang in a cabaret frequented by cavalry officers.
Alphonse’s sister made her debut singing at a Cafe-concert in Moulins pavilion, La Rotonde. She performed to entertain the crowd between star turns. She got the name ‘coco’ when she spent her nights singing in the cabaret, she often sang the song ‘Who Has Seen Coco’, which she says was a nickname given to her by her father.

Coco also worked in the spa resort town of Vichy in 1906. She performed at many concert halls, theatres, and cafés hoping to achieve success as a performer. She auditioned but failed because her singing voice was marginal so she could not find stage work. She found a job at Grande Grille where she worked as a donneuse d’eau. She returned to Moulins when Vichy Season was over where she realized a serious stage career is not part of her future endeavours.
Coco became the mistress of Étienne Balsan a young French ex-cavalry officer and a textile heir at the age of twenty-three. She also had an affair with Balsan’s friend, Captain Arthur Edward. He was not faithful to Coco even though they spent a lot of time together. They continued their affair even when he got married. He died in a car accident on 22 December 1919.
Her personal life was full of controversies. According to the biography ‘Coco Chanel: The Legend and the Life’ Andre Palasse, the only child of her sister Julia who had committed suicide was actually Chanel’s child with Balsan.
