Melissa Merandino’s maternal grandparents are Vincent R. Hrunek and Marie Hrunek. Melissa’s grandmother, Marie was an adoptee, who launched the East Chicago Business College before she got married while Melissa’s grandfather, Vincent Rudolph Hrunek was an industrial chemist who immigrated from Czechoslovakia, and became a stay-at-home father.
Missy’s mother went to Warren G. Harding Elementary School in Hammond and performed in school plays all through her childhood, graduated from East Chicago’s Roosevelt High School in 1944, then attended East Chicago Business College.
Missy Merandino’s mom was a member of the East Chicago Beta Sigma chapter and graduated from the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University where she studied theater. Later Melissa’s mom graduated and worked as a stenographer and secretary for the car foreman on the RIP track of the B&O Railroad.
Missy’s mother saved $400 and told her parents she was changing her name to Betsy Palmer and relocating to New York City with Sasha Igler, who had a job in advertising.
The mother of Missy started her TV working for nothing describing lingerie modeled on the Art Jarrett show. Betsy Palmer’s first acting job came in 1951 when she joined the cast of the weekday soap opera Miss Susan.
Quickly, Missy’s mother came to be known as a regular supporting movie and Broadway actress and as a panelist on the game show I’ve Got a Secret. She held major parts in TV shows such as Queen Bee, The Web, Omnibus, Studio One, Mister Roberts, and Kitty Carter in The Long Gray Line.

Missy’s mother also played Jason Voorhees’ mother, Pamela Voorhees, in the popular slasher film Friday the 13th. Along with appearances on Knots Landing and The Love Boat, she created the role of “Suzanne Becker” in 1982 on the CBS soap opera As the World Turns.
Missy’s mother got involved romantically with James Dean. They met as they were working on an episode of the Studio One television series. Missy’s mother got married to Vincent J. Merendino. Vincent was an obstetrician-gynecologist. They met in New York on a blind date and later they got divorced after 17 years. They had one daughter, Melissa.
On May 29, 2015, Missy Merandino’s mother died of natural causes at a hospice care center in Danbury, Connecticut. She was 88 years old when she died.
