He is the adopted child of the couple Allen and Sue Dick and was named Andrew Roane Dick. His father was in the Navy.
He lived with his family in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, and Yugoslavia before moving to Chicago in 1979. Andy Dick attended Lassiter High School, which was being temporarily housed at George Walton Comprehensive High School in Cobb County, Georgia.
