He was performing with local Swindon groups in clubs and dance halls playing mostly Buddy Holly songs and All Things Bright was among his early groups which opened for The Hollies and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes.
As a songwriter, Ann Guirron’s husband signed an eight-year contract at age 18 with the skiffle artist and record producer Lonnie Donegan. He got an advertisement in Melody Maker and auditioned as guitarist for Marty Wilde. He worked with Wilde and his wife in The Wilde Three.
