Aida Yolanda Gatica’s dad was born Luis Enrique Gatica Silva.He was born on 11 August 1928 in Rancagua, Chile to a merchant and small farmer, José Agustín Gatica, and a homemaker who had a passion for music, Juana Silva. He was the youngest of seven siblings.

Aida’s grandfather died when Aida’s father was very young, 4 years old. Aida’s grandmother became a widow and work as a seamstress to raise her children. The family teamed to face the hardships, and music always managed to lighten the burden.

Aida Gatica’s father went to school at Instituto O’Higgins. Aida’s father is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential exponents of the bolero and one of the most popular of all time worldwide. Lucho Gatica and his brother Arturo strived as singers before they could release their first album, when Gatica was twenty-one years old, in 1949.

Aida’s father become one of the most popular Latin American vocalists of all time as he sold millions of records around the world, packed theaters and stadiums from Madrid to Manila, starred in movies and became a celebrity in Hollywood where his friends included Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner.

It is estimated that Lucho Gatica published more than 90 recordings and toured across the world, performing in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Aida’s father had his success built on his unique ability to convey the romantic, lyrical, and passionate essence of the song style known as the bolero and was part of the few pop artists who managed to survive the ups and downs of the fickle music market.

Aida’s father got married twice after his initial divorce. He married Puerto Rican actress Mapita Cortés and they had two sons: Luis and Alfredo. The two got separated in 1981.

Aida’s dad married Diane Lane Schmidt and together they had a daughter named Lily but Diane Schmidt died in 1985. He then married his third and final wife, Leslie Deeb, in 1986. They gave birth to the seventh and final child.

Aida Yolanda Gatica’s father altogether had seven children. Unfortunately, he died on 13 November 2018 in Mexico. He died from pneumonia.
